The Society of the Divine Word (SVD) is celebrating a momentous milestone — 100 years of missionary presence in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, the area that includes the Diocese of Aitape.
A Century of Faith
The first SVD missionaries arrived on the Sepik coast in the 1920s, bringing the Gospel to diverse communities along the coast and into the interior highlands. Their work laid the foundation for what would become the Diocese of Aitape.
Contributions to the Region
Over the past century, SVD missionaries have:
- Established schools — Over 50 primary schools and several high schools
- Built health facilities — Clinics and aid posts serving remote communities
- Translated Scripture — The Bible and liturgical texts in multiple local languages
- Trained local clergy — Mentoring generations of Papua New Guinean priests
- Preserved culture — Documenting local languages, customs, and oral traditions
Celebration Events
A series of events are planned to mark the centenary:
- Thanksgiving Mass at the Aitape Cathedral with Archbishop Rochus Tatamai of Madang
- Exhibition of historical photographs and artifacts
- Publication of a commemorative book
- Community cultural festival
Ongoing Mission
While many SVD missionaries have been replaced by diocesan clergy, the Society continues to serve in the region through:
- Parish ministry in remote areas
- Seminary formation
- Social development projects
- Interfaith dialogue
“We give thanks to God for 100 years of SVD presence in the Sepik,” said Bishop Siby Mathew. “Their sacrifice and dedication have brought the light of Christ to thousands of people.”
