Holy Week Celebrations Across the Diocese

Parishes throughout the Diocese of Aitape marked Holy Week 2026 with deeply moving liturgical celebrations that blended the sacred traditions of the Church with the rich cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday processions were held in all major parishes, with the faithful carrying palm branches and singing hymns in both Tok Pisin and local languages. In many villages, traditional drums accompanied the procession.

Holy Thursday

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper was celebrated in the Cathedral and in all parishes. The washing of the feet ceremony was particularly moving, as bishops, priests, and lay leaders knelt to wash the feet of the poor and elderly.

Good Friday

The Stations of the Cross were performed in dramatic fashion in several parishes, with parishioners reenacting the Passion of Christ along village roads. In Aitape town, the procession drew hundreds of participants.

Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday

The Easter Vigil, celebrated with bonfires and candlelight, was the highlight of the week. In many parishes, catechumens received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion during the vigil.

Easter Sunday Masses were filled with joy, as communities gathered to celebrate the Resurrection with music, dance, and shared meals.

“Holy Week in Aitape is truly special,” said Fr. Michael Simbai. “The faith of our people is deep, and they bring their whole hearts to these celebrations.”
