Pastoral Board Reviews Sacramental Preparation Programs

The Diocesan Pastoral Board held a two-day meeting to review and update the programs for sacramental preparation across the Diocese of Aitape.

Areas Reviewed

Baptism Preparation

  • New program for parents requesting infant baptism
  • Emphasis on parental responsibility for faith formation
  • Integration of godparent formation

First Communion and Confirmation

  • Standardized preparation program for all parishes
  • Minimum preparation period of 6 months recommended
  • Involvement of parents and families in the process

Marriage Preparation

  • Enhanced pre-marriage course covering faith, communication, and family planning
  • Requirement for at least 3 months preparation
  • Introduction of married couples as mentors for engaged couples

Challenges Identified

The Board noted several challenges:

  • Limited number of trained catechists in remote areas
  • Language barriers in multilingual communities
  • Inconsistent preparation standards across parishes
  • Need for more culturally appropriate materials

Action Steps

  1. Develop a diocesan-wide sacramental preparation manual
  2. Train catechists in each deanery on the new programs
  3. Create materials in Tok Pisin and key local languages
  4. Establish a monitoring system for preparation programs

Fr. Simon Atewe, Chairman of the Pastoral Board, expressed confidence that the updated programs will strengthen the sacramental life of the diocese.
