Understanding the Seven Sacraments

Understanding the Seven Sacraments

The seven sacraments are at the heart of Catholic life. They are visible signs of God’s invisible grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church.

The Sacraments of Initiation

1. Baptism

  • What: Washing with water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
  • Effect: Removes original sin, makes us children of God, members of the Church
  • In PNG: Many of our communities celebrate baptism with great joy, welcoming new members into the family of faith

2. Confirmation

  • What: Anointing with Sacred Chrism and laying on of hands by the Bishop
  • Effect: Strengthens the graces of Baptism, seals us with the Holy Spirit
  • In PNG: Often celebrated when the Bishop makes pastoral visits to parishes

3. Holy Eucharist

  • What: The Body and Blood of Christ under the appearances of bread and wine
  • Effect: Nourishes our souls, unites us with Christ and the Church
  • In PNG: The Sunday Mass is the center of community life in our parishes

The Sacraments of Healing

4. Penance and Reconciliation

  • What: Confession of sins to a priest and receiving absolution
  • Effect: Forgiveness of sins committed after Baptism, reconciliation with God and the Church
  • Practical note: Encourage regular confession, at least once a month

5. Anointing of the Sick

  • What: Anointing with Oil of the Sick and prayer by a priest
  • Effect: Spiritual and sometimes physical healing, strength in suffering
  • In PNG: Call the priest when someone is seriously ill — don’t wait until it’s too late

The Sacraments of Service

6. Holy Orders

  • What: Ordination of deacons, priests, and bishops
  • Effect: Configures the ordained to serve the Church as ministers of Christ
  • In PNG: We need your prayers for more vocations!

7. Matrimony

  • What: The marriage covenant between a man and a woman before God
  • Effect: A lifelong bond of love and fidelity, open to new life
  • In PNG: Catholic marriage must be properly prepared and celebrated in the Church

Teaching Tips for Catechists

  1. Use visual aids — pictures, diagrams, symbols
  2. Tell stories from the Bible and from local experience
  3. Always connect each sacrament to Jesus
  4. Make it practical — how does this sacrament change our daily life?
  5. Encourage questions and discussion
