Bible Study: The Book of Genesis — Creation and Covenant

Bible Study: The Book of Genesis — Creation and Covenant

Welcome to our diocesan Bible study series! This month, we begin with the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible and the foundation of our faith story.

Overview

Genesis (from the Greek word for “beginning”) tells us about:

  • The creation of the world and humanity
  • The fall of Adam and Eve
  • The story of Noah and the flood
  • God’s covenant with Abraham
  • The stories of Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph

Week 1: Creation (Genesis 1-2)

Read Together

Genesis 1:1-2:4 — The Seven Days of Creation

Key Points

  1. God creates by speaking — “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” God’s word is powerful and creative.
  2. Everything God made is good — After each day, God saw that it was good. Our world, our land, our sea, our people — all are good.
  3. Humans are made in God’s image — “So God created mankind in His own image” (Gen 1:27). Every person — man, woman, child — reflects God’s image.
  4. The Sabbath rest — God rested on the seventh day, teaching us the importance of rest and worship.

Discussion Questions

  1. What does it mean that humans are made in the “image of God”?
  2. How can we be better stewards of God’s creation in our communities?
  3. Do we honor the Sabbath by attending Mass and resting from unnecessary work?

Connection to PNG Culture

In many Papua New Guinean cultures, there are creation stories that speak of the land, sea, and sky being formed by a creator spirit. How do these stories connect with the Genesis account?

Week 2: The Fall (Genesis 3)

To be continued next session…
