The Role of Catechists in PNG
In the Diocese of Aitape, catechists play a vital role in keeping faith communities alive, especially in areas where priests can visit only a few times a year.
“Our catechists are the backbone of the Church in Aitape,” said Fr. Thomas Waino, the Diocesan Director of Catechesis. “Without them, many of our communities would have no one to lead prayers, teach the faith, or prepare people for the sacraments.”
New Materials Distributed
Each participant received a catechist handbook in English and Tok Pisin, along with visual aids for teaching children about the faith.
The diocese plans to conduct similar workshops twice a year to ensure ongoing formation of its catechist network.
