A new Catholic primary school has been blessed and officially opened in the Lumi District of the Sandaun Province, bringing quality education closer to remote highland communities.
The school, named St. Joseph’s Primary School, was built through the combined efforts of the diocese, local community, and international donors.
A Long-Awaited Dream
For decades, children in the surrounding villages had to walk over three hours each way to attend the nearest school. Many families could not afford to send their children away for education.
“This school is the answer to many prayers,” said community leader Mr. Paul Numake. “Our children can now learn without leaving their families.”
School Facilities
The new school includes:
- Four classrooms with desks and chairs
- A small library stocked with donated books
- A teacher’s residence
- A chapel for daily prayers
- A sports field cleared by community volunteers
Bishop’s Blessing
Bishop Siby Mathew presided over the blessing ceremony, sprinkling holy water on the new buildings and praying for the success of the students and teachers.
“Education is the key to a better future,” the Bishop said. “By investing in our children’s education, we are investing in the future of the Church and of Papua New Guinea.”
The school will initially serve Grades 1 through 4, with plans to expand to Grade 8 in the coming years. Two teachers have been assigned by the diocese to begin classes.
