National Eucharistic Congress Planned for 2027

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands has announced plans for a National Eucharistic Congress to be held in 2027, the first of its kind in the nation’s history.

Congress Details

  • Theme: “Do This in Remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19)
  • Expected Date: September 2027
  • Location: To be announced (Port Moresby or Lae under consideration)
  • Expected Attendance: 5,000-10,000 participants from all dioceses

Preparation Phase

Each diocese has been asked to organize preparatory activities leading up to the congress:

  1. Parish-level Eucharistic adoration — Monthly Holy Hours in every parish
  2. Catechesis on the Eucharist — Special teaching series during Sunday Masses
  3. Youth involvement — Art, essay, and music competitions on Eucharistic themes
  4. Small group studies — Bible study groups focusing on Eucharistic passages

Bishop Siby Mathew’s Response

Bishop Siby Mathew of Aitape welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm:

“The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian life. This National Congress will be a beautiful opportunity for the faithful across Papua New Guinea to deepen their love for the Blessed Sacrament.”

The Diocese of Aitape has already begun forming a local organizing committee to coordinate its participation.
