The Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands has announced plans for a National Eucharistic Congress to be held in 2027, the first of its kind in the nation’s history.
Congress Details
- Theme: “Do This in Remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19)
- Expected Date: September 2027
- Location: To be announced (Port Moresby or Lae under consideration)
- Expected Attendance: 5,000-10,000 participants from all dioceses
Preparation Phase
Each diocese has been asked to organize preparatory activities leading up to the congress:
- Parish-level Eucharistic adoration — Monthly Holy Hours in every parish
- Catechesis on the Eucharist — Special teaching series during Sunday Masses
- Youth involvement — Art, essay, and music competitions on Eucharistic themes
- Small group studies — Bible study groups focusing on Eucharistic passages
Bishop Siby Mathew’s Response
Bishop Siby Mathew of Aitape welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm:
“The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian life. This National Congress will be a beautiful opportunity for the faithful across Papua New Guinea to deepen their love for the Blessed Sacrament.”
The Diocese of Aitape has already begun forming a local organizing committee to coordinate its participation.
