Young Catholics Making a Difference: Meet Our Youth Leaders

Across the Diocese of Aitape, young Catholics are stepping up to serve their communities and their Church. Here are some inspiring stories of youth leadership.

Patrick Yangum, 22 — Catechist in Training

Patrick grew up in a remote village near Amanab. Despite limited resources, he excelled in school and felt called to serve the Church.

“My grandfather was a catechist for 40 years. He taught me that serving God is the highest calling. I want to continue his legacy.”

Patrick is currently in the diocesan catechist training program and will be assigned to a parish next year.

Theresa Wambiak, 20 — Youth Choir Director

Theresa leads the youth choir at Holy Cross Parish and has composed several hymns in Tok Pisin that are now sung across the diocese.

“Music is my way of praying. When I sing, I feel close to God. And when I see other young people joining the choir, I know that music can bring people to faith.”

Benedict Sawi, 19 — Community Health Worker

Benedict graduated from the diocesan health worker training program and now serves at the Lumi Health Post.

“I see my work as a ministry. Every patient is Jesus. When I treat a sick child or help a mother during childbirth, I am doing God’s work.”

Angela Kuman, 18 — Environmental Champion

Angela organized a beach cleanup campaign in Aitape that mobilized over 100 young volunteers.

“God gave us this beautiful land and sea. It is our responsibility to take care of it. I am teaching my friends that caring for the environment is caring for God’s creation.”
